Jack of the Wood has been fortunate to have had some really amazing musicians grace its stage over the years. From members of Flogging Molly, Shovels & Rope, Dick Dale, Southern Culture On The Skids, The Avett Brothers, Steep Canyon Rangers, the Kruger Brothers of Switzerland and Mary Jane Lamond of Nova Scotia to Ralph Lewis and Mark Pruitt from our own back yard. We’ve hosted Old Crow Medicine Show, Warren Haynes Christmas Jam By Day, Brother, the Red Stick Ramblers, Colonel Bruce Hampton, Seven Nations, Old Blind Dogs and many more.

The entertainment offered up on the weekend is first rate and up close, getting started around 9:00 p.m. for a minimal cover charge. We also play host to three different jam sessions throughout the week. On Sundays starting around 3 p.m. is the Irish Session, On the 1st and 3rd Tuesday of every month, we continue our Singer Songwriter in the Round series, which is always free and goes from 7-9 p.m. Wednesdays at 5 p.m. is our Old Time Mountain Music jam and Thursday night is the highly popular Bluegrass jam, which starts around 7:00 p.m. Everyone is invited to bring their instrument, help make a little music, or just come down and listen in.

An innocent observer may initially label this young quartet a ‘bluegrass’ or ‘old-timey’ band due to their instrumentation but the Westbound Rangers offer so much more than that. While steeped in both bluegrass and old time traditions, their unique blend of roots music draws just as heavily from rock and country musical influences and spans the breadth of American music styles.

Black Masala

Black Masala is an eclectic nine-piece group of Washington, D.C. based musicians from a diverse variety of musical traditions and backgrounds. The band is comprised of members from Thievery Corporation, See-I, Yamamonem Jazz Band, Yellow Dubmarine, and Bellflur. Featuring a wide array of instruments from tuba to accordion to banjo, the band’s music features a colorful mix of sounds that draw inspiration from the melodies of Eastern European brass bands, New Orleans jazz, Latin grooves, Ambient/Experimental Indie rock riffs, and even a hint of Appalachian twang. Expect a party!

Originally formed by Mike Ounallah and trombonist Matt Hotez (Yellow Dubmarine), the band’s focus was based in the Eastern European Brass tradition. Keeping true to its roots, the band has since gone on to add a number of new musicians – including several vocalists – making for a high-energy live set of original material.
